Beyond Fear

‘Beyond Fear’ is a concept project based around the primitive emotion of ‘fear’. I used multiple research methods to understand how fear feels & presents itself in different people, before trying to recreate this feeling using sound, motion graphics & design. The concept is presented as a movie advertising campaign, including a trailer, poster & packaging each of which re-interprets the design style of the 1980’s & the early motion graphics used during this time, invoking nostalgia, humour & a sense of displacement in the viewer.

The film is centred around the quote: “Fear is like a hologram. It seems real, filled with substance. And then, when you go beyond it, you realise there is nothing there. It’s all an illusion.”

The quote embodies my own relationship with fear, it can often feel all encompassing before reaching the realisation that nothing bad is really going to happen - I used sound & motion graphics to invoke the feeling of building tension & ultimately overwhelm, followed by the relief of nothing bad happening so that the viewer can experience first-hand the journey fear often takes us on. The poster & VHS packaging are a static representation of the quote.
